"Nippon Hoso Kyokai (NHK) of Japan started a National level Robot Contest in 1991 called 'ROBOCON'. In 2002, they made it an International activity inviting the National Winners from countries whose broadcasters are members of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU). From 2002 to 2004, we in India conducted the National Contests at IIT Kanpur and Nirma Institute of Technology with just three participants in 2004.
The National Contests started being organised by Doordarshan Mumbai and MIT Group Pune in 2005 and I am delighted to say that since then the number of participants had increased exponentially and in 2016 it crossed a century!
Robocon Contests are a great technical gaming activity, where the spirit of sportsmanship is inculcated in participants along with the core values of 'teamwork'. Needless to say the competitive spirit and the will to excel in technical academia also play a big role in these contests. For the broadcasters like Doordarshan (Prasar Bharati) and Akashvani it offers the opportunity to take the message to the remotest regions of our country. After successfully hosting 2 of the International Events in 2008 and 2014, the DD-MIT combine is all set to organize the next event in 2020. I wish all the participants a fruitful, successful and enjoyable experience.
